  Its the calcium that is most important. You want slow, appropriate  growth in large breed dogs. Over-nutrition is a HUGE problem in  America, and in america's pets. By regulating that growth, you allow  proper formation of bones and joints and prevent a number of growth  defects, including panosteitis, ununited anconeal process, and  several studies have shown it reduces the severity of hip dysplasia.  Food is something we control, and the younger the dog and the larger  the dog, the more important it is that the food meets these  requirements. Its also equally important that the growing dog is  kept lean to keep excessive weight off the growing joints. Genetics  plays a role, and so does exercise, but diet can make a big  difference, and this is one instance when a pretty ingredients list  does not equal the best option... Feeding an appropriate puppy food  is most critical at a young age. If your dog will be over 50 pounds  as an adult, then it is STRONGLY recommended feeding a large breed  puppy food. Orthopedic problems abound in this breed, and  appropriate feeding can make vast differences in your dogs quality  of life as an adult.
