However, most are mixed as the majority of merles today come down from the tainted Madison line. Two other breeds who may have contributed the merle pattern to the breed is the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog (ABBB) or the Catahoula Bulldog (CatBull for short and a hybrid between the CLD and the American Bulldog). These beautiful bull breeds also comes in merle.Of course, we all know that the first bull & terrier pit dogs imported from the UK in the 1800s were smaller in stature, with some males only averaging 25 lbs originally. In the popular American idea that "bigger is better" these imported dogs were bred up in size for farm work & other various chores besides dog fighting, thus creating the larger AMERICAN Bull Terrier (this was the breed's original UKC name, the "pit" was only added later). Could this "upsizing" have been done it by breeding larger dog to larger dog, or could they have done it by outcrossing to another bulldog, like the Alapaha or CatBull? This would not only increase the size but introduce the merle pattern into our breed. If a breeder of the distant past (100 years or more ago) infused ABBB or CatBull blood in during the development of the breed wouldn't that make them a mix then? The answer would be no. The ABBB or CatBull is not an APBT!!! However ... (aren't there always one of those?? lol.) the infusion of ABBB or CatBull blood would have occurred before the APBT breed type was set, thus making merle a "natural" color in our breed.Just as the APBT inherited it's blue color from it's ancestor the Blue Poll & it's tan point pattern from it's ancestor the Manchester Terrier, it could have inherited the merle pattern from it's (possible) ancestor, the Alapaha or CatBull. Either scenario is possible considering both the breed's past & as well as it's present. The second theory is "The Misidentification Theory." This is the offical stance of the ADBA. The ADBA has openly said that merles have been in the breed since the ADBA's inception in 1909 (thus giving credence to the opinion that merle is a "natural" occuring pattern in the breed in some cases)..
